PARENTS’ COUNCIL
The Tullow Community School Parents’ Association is affiliated to PACCS (Parents’ Association of Community & Comprehensive Schools).
Tullow was one of the first Parents’ Association of Community Schools in Ireland. PACCS was founded in Tullow in 1984 with Phil Callanan as A/Chairman. It developed rapidly all over the country and was instrumental in setting up the National Parents’ Council.
The Parents Council is a forum in which parents may liaise with the Principal and teaching staff in the school, and have representation on the Board of Management. We undertake and promote activities which advance the aims and objectives of the Community School and bring to the attention of the Principal, or his representative, various concerns of parents. We also co-operate with the Principal in implementing decisions taken as a result of consultation.
Tullow Community School Parents’ Association is a very active and vibrant committee today. Attached are:-
1. Names of our current members and Board of Management representatives.
2. Details of our Constitution.
3. List of activities and events we participate in during the year.
We hope that our endeavours benefit everyone connected with Tullow Community School.

All parents of children attending Tullow Community School are members of the Tullow Community School Parents Association.
A Parent’s Council is formed in order to conduct the affairs of the Parent’s Association. This Council consists of two parent’s nominees who are elected to sit on the School Board of Management (one mother and one father) plus eighteen additional members elected by the parents.
The Parent’s Council meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Broadly speaking these meeting are taken up with the role of the Parent’s Council, which is:
1. To meet the Principal or his representative for consultation and where necessary to bring to his attention various concerns of parents and co-operate with the Membership
2. To supervise the election of parents’ nominees on the Board of Management,
3. To advise the parents’ nominees of the views and opinions of the parents and to offer such other advice as the Association sees fit.
4. To undertake and/or promote activities with advance the aims and objectives of the Community School.
5. This Association shall not concern itself with the day to day running of the school.
6. The Association, in discharging its functions, recognises that the examination and resolution of problems relating to individual pupils or parents will be for determination between the individual pupil and his/her parents and the School Principal in implementing decisions taken as a result of consultation.
Current news
Membership of PACCS
Tullow Community School Parent’s Council is an active member of the Parents Associations of Community and Comprehensive Schools. The Parent’s Council maintains contact with PACCS on a range of issues of consequence to parents of students, including attendance at the PACCS Annual Conference in early March of each year.
Parent’s Council Bi-Annual Fashion Show.
The Parents’ Council runs a Fashion Show every two years as a fund raiser for particular School Projects. The Fashion Show in 2009 was a great success. There were a total of eight exhibitors who showed clothes ranging from day wear, mother of the bride outfits, communion wear and evening dresses. The school students provided welcome musical entertainment during a break in the show while guests availed of a cheese and wine reception. We had many exhibitors showing and selling their products on stands and this proved very popular with our audience. Thanks to generous sponsorship, a well supported raffle and strong ticket sales the Parents Council earned in excess of €8000 profit from the venture. This will provide a new P.A. System for the school and some school equipment.
Annual Second-Hand Book Sale
The Parent’s Council runs a second-hand book sale at the beginning of each new school year. Students or parents are given the opportunity to return school books they no longer have need for. Once these are still required for the school curriculum, they are offered for re-sale to other parents/students at reasonable prices. Though the book sale requires a lot of work and effort on behalf of the Parent’s Council, the service is seen to be of great benefit to parents and helps reduce what is often a high cost for school books.
School Jackets
The Parents’ Council were able to offer parents the opportunity to purchase school jackets for students attending Tullow Community School. Though the wearing of school jackets is not compulsory many parents and students availed of the opportunity to purchase a very smart navy jacket with the school crest in red on it. The jackets have proved very popular with the students.
Language Scholarships
The Parents’ Council fund French and German language scholarships for students of the school. There are four scholarships available to the value of €400 each. Details of these scholarships for next year are available from Mr. Duffy or Ms. Carberry.
School Open Evening.
Members of the Parents’ Council attend the school Open Evening. We provide information on the Parents’ Council and we answer queries from Parents.
Upcoming Events.
A sub-committee has been set up to look at the whole area of second hand books and to try and determine ways of cutting the high cost of book bills for parents including the possibility of a book rental scheme.
In view of the present economic downturn we are hoping to organise a Guest Speaker to deliver a talk on life skills, business and personal motivation to our senior students and parents.
The Parents Council would like to extend our congratulations to Aideen Fleming, Niamh O’Connor Byrne and Emma Twamley on their recent awards.
