September 2009:

Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Prior to the summer holidays it was decided to install a Biometric Registration System in the school to record pupil attendance. This decision was taken following consultation with the Parents Association and the Board of Management. The system is being funded by the Parents Association and is currently in use in another school in Carlow. The system allows for registration to be taken both morning and afternoon and has the capacity to alert parents via text message if their child has not registered in school on any given day.
How does it work?
Each pupil has an individual student number. Each student would have one fingerprint from each hand recorded on the data base, linked to their individual student number. There are two biometric clocks, located in the Canteen and Blue areas. On arrival in the school each pupil should go to one of the clocks, place the appropriate finger on the biometric reader and their registration will be recorded for that morning. All pupils will again be required to register between 12.50pm and 13.20pm (Monday to Thursday) for the afternoon classes.
The Biometric (fingerprint) information stored on the system is to be used only within the school, and only for the purpose of monitoring pupil attendance and punctuality.
The system is currently being installed and will be tested before being used on a school wide basis. In the interim registration will be recorded manually at 9.00am. Pupils should go directly to their 9.00am class where the subject teacher will record their attendance. If a student has been absent or late, on their return they should present their journal, containing a note from their parent explaining the reason for the absence/lateness, to Ms. Glynn in the canteen area between 8.30am and 9.00am. Pupils arriving late to school (after 9.00am) should sign in at the Deputy Principals office.
If any parent/guardian has a question or concern about any aspect of the registration system please contact me through the school office.
I would like once again to thank the Parents Association for their ongoing support for the school and in particular for their financial support for this registration system.

Pat Flynn (Principal)
