Tullow Community School’s 6th Year student, Darren McDonald is Lion’s Club Young Ambassador for the 21st Century (Carlow District).

Darren, who competed in an interview – based competition in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow against tough opposition from schools all over Co. Carlow, has been awarded the title of Carlow District Young Ambassador for the 21st Century. He won the judges over with his personality, positive spirit and his accounts of his volunteering and community involvement. Darren had previously earned his Bronze Gaisce award in Transition Year, which included 26 weeks of volunteering work. Through the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme, Darren and his team raised money for Pieta House, which focuses on mental health issues such as self-harm and suicide. During 5th year he participated in a sky dive which helped raise money for the Hope Foundation.

Outside of school, Darren carries out extensive fundraising activities – raising money for his local parish of Tullow, St. Laserian’s School, Carlow and promoting mental health awareness. He is the youth chairperson in the ‘Bishops House’ (youth outreach) in Tullow, and with their help organises ‘Generation Communication’, where teenagers visit the local daycare centre and talk, interact, sing and dance with senior members of the community. Darren would like to thank Cathy Lilicrap for inspiring him in his charity and volunteer work.

Darren goes on to represent Carlow in the next round of the Lions Club Young Ambassador for the 21st Century Awards in Clonmel in December. This is a wonderful achievement for Darren and we wish him well.

Congratulations also to Niamh Bailey who came a very close second place.
